It’s easy to see how incredibly important the number 8 is to the Chinese – they’ve chosen 08/08/2008 at 8.08pm as the date for the beginning of the 2008 Olympic Games.

The number Eight is similar to the Mandarin and Cantonese terms for prosperity. Therefore, eight is regarded as a highly auspicious number by the Chinese embodying increased luck and good fortune. According to the Tong Shu, a calendar outlining and enabling the selection of auspicious days for various events, the 8th of August is particularly good for an opening ceremony.

From the perspective of the Chinese astrology system called the Four Pillars of Destiny the Beijing Olympics begin on the day of the Golden Dragon – a Yang Metal day. The month of August is also a period of metal making the two weeks allocated to these games a time of very powerful metal providing the strength to conquer.

The Chinese time system is made up of twelve hours and so each two hour section is represented by one of the twelve animals. The chosen time of 8pm for the opening of these games is the hour of the Dog and it is strong between 7 and 9pm. Interestingly, the hour of the Dog and the chosen day of the Dragon bring with it a clash. This could bring some challenges during the first hour of the ceremony but not necessarily transparent or lasting.

The Olympic Flag, first flown during the 1920 Olympic Games contains, on a white background five interconnected rings representing the five significant continents. These rings also symbolize the potential friendships gained from these international sporting competitions. The colours of these rings; red, green, black, yellow and blue were chosen because at least one of them appeared on the flag of every country of the world. From the Chinese metaphysical perspective these colours represent four of the all important five elements namely; water, wood, fire and earth with the white background signifying the fifth element of metal.

The founder of the modern Olympic Games, Pierre de Coubertin designed the universally recognizable Olympic Flag. He also wrote an oath (recited at each game by one of the athletes) and an Olympic motto. The latter being borrowed from a Latin phrase: Citius, Altius, Fortius meaning….Swifter, Higher, Stronger.

Pierre de Coubertin’s athlete’s oath and creed are something that can be held within all our hearts as we walk our path in life.

The Olympic Oath: “In the name of all competitors, I promise that we shall take part in these Olympic Games, respecting and abiding by the rules that govern them, in the true spirit of sportsmanship, for the glory of sport and the honour of our teams.”

The Olympic Creed: “The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part, just as the most important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle. The essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well.”

In 1936 the chairman of the organizing committee suggested a torch relay. So, in accordance with tradition (the same reason why the opening procession is always led by the Greek team), the Olympic flame is lit using a curved mirror and sunlight on the ancient site of Olympia, Greece. It then travels a specified route to the host city remaining alight until the games have come to an end. The flame represents purity and the endeavor of perfection.

In the preceding months of the Beijing Games the transport of the flame from Mount Olympia in Greece, around the world to the host city of Beijing, has been subject to considerable political protest and controversy.

Over the coming two weeks each country throws their support behind their athletes in the hope that they will bring home a fair share of bronze, silver and gold medals (although the last medal made entirely of gold was awarded in 1912). However, it could be worthwhile to remember that; ‘the important thing is to participate with good sportsmanship and have fought well’. Go Australia!! Swifter, Higher, Stronger.

There are great Advantages of Growing Herbs Indoors, such as the convenience of having fresh herbs right in the kitchen. Wouldn’t it be nice to need a particular herb, and just reach in the window, which is only a few steps away, and cut it off?

You can do this if you grow your herbs in your home. You would want to keep the herbs that you use the most, as close to the cooking area as you can. Another benefit of indoor herb growing is that herbs taste much better when they are cut fresh. That is why you see all the famous chiefs on T.V. cut them straight from the garden.

There are some herbs that have a great aroma, such as mint, which will keep your kitchen smelling good. However, there are some herbs, such as sage, which does not smell as good; these herbs should be planted outside near the kitchen door. Other types of herbs will grow beautiful flowers, which will make your kitchen look livelier. Still there are other herbs that have healing benefits as well as being used as a culinary herb, such as garlic, which helps lower blood pressure. Ginger is good for stopping nausea and for helping relieve arthritis. Parsley, which is used for a garnish more than anything else, is great for people who are trying to diet; and it is great for kidney problems.

There is also the advantage of you controlling the herbs growing conditions. You control how much and what type of light you want the plants to have, even if it is a mixture of sunlight and/or fluorescent lighting. You control the watering conditions as well as better control of diseases, and harmful bugs.

This all sounds so good that you may want to just jump in and start planting an herb garden right away; but you feel that you do not know enough about growing herbs to try it. If you really have the enthusiasm to try your hand at growing herbs indoors, it is a good idea to purchase an inexpensive book about herbs, preferably one with pictures of the herbs in it. This booklet will be your best friend for growing your own herbs. It will give you a brief history where certain herbs originated and how difficult it will be to grow. The book will also have some great suggestions about how to prepare your soil, and watering conditions. It will also have suggestions for placing your herb pots or containers in certain rooms of your home. However, not all books will mention that you can freeze and dry your own herbs when it comes near the end of the growing season.

On nice sunny days, you can move some of your herbs outside for a few hours at a time, as long as you do not put them out during the heat of the day. Remember that they are houseplants and they will not be used to the harsh heat and environment, but they do like to go out for fresh air in the morning or afternoon sun.

There are even more advantages than this small article can cover, it would take a large book to actually cover everything. Remember that herbs are not as hard to grow as many people think they are. Once you get the basics down the rest are easy. Growing Herbs Indoors is a wonderful hobby that I’m sure you will enjoy.

Wealth has been viewed from different perspectives and has been given different meanings and interpretations. A politician may see it as a means to power and control. Hence, he could engage himself in all forms of manipulations and pervasions to acquire it. The highly moral and religious man might see wealth to be full of dirty and evil activities that separate him from the object of his worship. On the other hand, a businessman may see wealth as the end result of a profitable business transaction.

Whatever it is that wealth means to you, the fact remains that wealth is desirable. Everyone desires to become wealthy but very few know what to do to achieve this inborn desire. Ironically, most of those who know how to become rich and wealthy, have not been able to find fulfillment in it. They have thought that if they could have so much money, buy the most expensive cars, build the most beautiful houses, they would be fulfilled in life. But unfortunately, they have been disappointed after acquiring all these. This brings us to the conclusion that having so much money alone, does not bring fulfillment in life.

Wealth is a state of well-being in every area of your life that brings about fulfillment. If you acquire so much money, and it does not bring you to a state of well-being in every area of your life, then you are far from being wealthy.

Everyone is designed to fulfil a purpose. It is in fulfilling that purpose that you can find fulfillment and happiness If your so much money does not fulfil a valuable purpose, it would become meaningless and will not give you fulfillment. Take time to discover whatever it is that gives you happiness and fulfillment, and pursue it. It is in achieving it, that you can really become wealthy.

Wealth is not an end. It is the means that leads to an end-the fulfillment of a purpose. The earlier you realised this, the better. This is why those who have acquired so much money without fulfilling any reasonable purpose became more miserable than they were. Wealth is not all about money, cars, houses, etc. It is a vision you you see, and equip yourself to achieve it, and become happy when you achieve it. It is a problem you solve, and become rewarded for solving it.

You are equipped to solve a problem. There is a deposit of abilities within you. You need to refine this deposit into a desirable product- a skill. People are going to need this product, and they are going to look for you. And when you give them the product, they are going to willingly reward you. This reward is going to enhance your state of well-being.

Henry Ford had a vision to solve transportation problem, and he set out to manufacture a car. He was so captivated by this vision that nothing could stop him. He fulfilled his purpose and at the end was adequately rewarded for it. Your dream may not be to solve the transportation problem like Henry Ford. But whatever it is, pursue it with all your heart. It might even be to help someone else achieve his dream. The major thing is that you are solving a problem some where, and you are being adequately rewarded for it, and your reward enhances your state of well-being.

The first step to your success is to be prepared. Teachers love it when only a few people bring the right things and one of those few people are you. On your first day you should have all of your supplies so that the teacher can put a nice big check by your name. If you are not prepared on the first day then you should be prepared your second day because if you wait then you will already be behind the teacher which will turn out disastrous in the long run.

The second step is being responsible, caring, and diligent. In order to show your teacher that you are a diligent worker, you should try your best and not get distracted on your first assignment even if it is a little get to know your classmates worksheet. If the teacher drops something then help them pick it up to show that you care. Help your classmates that our struggling not just to impress the teacher but to feel good that you helped someone. You should also try to always be on time because you may get in big trouble if your late a lot plus the teacher may not like you very much either.

The last step to your success is get good grades. When your teacher hands out an A they feel that they did their job well. When they hand out an F or a D they feel that they have failed at their teaching career. Not to mention, when you go to college and they see bad grades then you may have to go work at Burger King because they don’t think you would live up to the standard of a great student.

I wish you the best on your first day of your new school year!

It is currently the year 2009. Recent reports have begun to appear proclaiming ancient seers and prophets have predicted that the date December 21, 2012 will in fact mark the end of humanity. Can this be possible? What are these 2012 predictions specifically and what is behind them? Is this a massive hoax or a reality that should alarm us? This article will try to answer these pressing questions.

The origin of these 2012 predictions comes from the Mayan calendar. The Mayans were a pre-industrialized society that thrived in Meso-America between 300 and 1000 CE. The Mayans established precise astronomical and astrological instruments through which they based their means of measuring time, their calendar.

The Mayan calendar is made up of a series of “counts” which mark time in terms of epochs. One of these “counts” is known as the long count and it measures a length of time of approximately 5,000 years. The Mayans put a great deal of symbolism into the passage of milestones and it was believed that the expiration of the long count would signify a major event for humanity. Scholars have estimated that the long count will “expire” on December 21, 2012.

What does this mean for humanity?

There is no specific meaning to inferred from the passage of the long count. It simply signifies that a certain amount of time has elapsed. That is, at least, one explanation of it. Another explanation, which has gained popularity among subscribers of mystery theories, is that the expiration of the long count will result in a major catastrophe for humanity.

Thus some believers in this theory have postulated their own hypothesis about what may transpire on that date. These 2012 predictions run the gamut with some predictions theorizing that a planetary collision make take place. However some people believe that with the expiration of the Mayan long count a new era of human evolution which will be less materialistic and more spiritual will come to pass.

Regardless of what transpires it seems clear that there is no reason for alarm. There is not agreement among the experts even about what is supposed to happen and the best course of action seems to be to continue living your life.
